Green Bay Packers

The Packers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but DeMonte Capehart at pick No. 219 is 46 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. On value alone, King makes the weekend a net positive.

It is not that Gray is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 35
In slot 26 they get an island corner, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Kalen King · CB · rank 42
Kalen King in Round 2, Pick 24 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 47
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Kris Jenkins graded well above the range. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 80
They did well to land Christian Mahogany in No. 87, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 88
No edge and no loss on McKinnley Jackson in the 88th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 107
They reached a country mile for Jaden Hicks at the 89th pick, and the board is aghast. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 125
A real head-scratcher, Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 92 is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 131
A want over a need in pick 124: Cedric Gray adds a linebacker while quarterback and tight end keeps waiting.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Ainias Smith · WR · rank 114
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ainias Smith at the 125th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 136
They took Malik Mustapha at par in Round 5, Pick 2, which is nothing to complain about. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Ethan Driskell · OT · rank 182
Nothing to complain about; Ethan Driskell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Jaylen Harrell · DE-EDGE · rank 194
They read the board right and Jaylen Harrell was the payoff at No. 203. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.35 · Pick 210 · Blake Watson · RB · rank 218
A conviction pick on Blake Watson at slot 210 that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 246
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Xavier Thomas well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 265
This one needs a full-page explanation: DeMonte Capehart in slot 219, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Donovan Jennings · OT · rank 244
Donovan Jennings in pick No. 246 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
