Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at No. 231. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Edwards pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 34 with a little surplus value in J.J. McCarthy. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at Round 3, Pick 4 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Fair-plus on Brenden Rice, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Roger Rosengarten went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. The roster fit checks out.
A reach for Daijun Edwards in the 180th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Jase McClellan in the 193rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
