New England Patriots

The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Borregales: B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Andres Borregales at pick 220 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

Every board in the league had Jefferson lower, and that gap is the story. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 7
Abdul Carter at No. 6 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 37
Tyler Booker at pick No. 38 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 46
Colston Loveland in slot 72 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Ajani Cornelius · OT · rank 104
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ajani Cornelius well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.1 · Pick 102 · Azareye'h Thomas · CB · rank 98
Good price on Azareye'h Thomas in the 102nd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 60
TreVeyon Henderson at pick 104 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Danny Stutsman · LB · rank 85
Taking Danny Stutsman in the 143rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R6.23 · Pick 198 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 206
They jumped the gun on Seth McLaughlin, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · KJ Jefferson · QB · rank 297
They left a pile of value on the table to take KJ Jefferson this early at slot 217. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Andres Borregales · PK · rank 136
Andres Borregales at No. 220 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Jack Kiser · LB · rank 189
Jack Kiser at the 238th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
