You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Patriots did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Emmanwori steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front at fair value.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyleik Williams. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good price on Xavier Restrepo in Round 3, Pick 2, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Quincy Riley at the 71st pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A straight-up fair deal on Shemar Turner at slot 98, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Nick Emmanwori, who had no business lasting to the 130th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Jonah Coleman in No. 167; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaishawn Barham slid further than he should have, and pick 194 is lovely value for the linebacker. A minor need, but a need all the same.
