Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: F.

by mn · 2024 NFL Draft · 3 picks · 1 steals · 1 reaches

Trades F
Future F

The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. A F, plain and simple.

So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

The cost of the McCarthy reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.10 · Pick 10 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In the 10th pick they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.30 · Pick 30 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 31
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jackson Powers-Johnson. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 27
They let Tyler Guyton come to them and pounced at pick 37. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
