The 49ers spent real capital to be 46 picks early on Anthony Lucas, and the board is going to hold them to it. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Royer pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Anthony Lucas in the Round 2 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A real head-scratcher, Jaeden Roberts in Round 4, Pick 27 is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nice patience on Will Lee III, who had no business lasting to No. 133. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chris McClellan. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a tight end like Joe Royer reach slot 139 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
