The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Caleb Williams, and the whole operation now runs on his development. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
Landing Barrett that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The Lloyd pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
They barely believed it either: Malik Nabers still on the board at Round 2, Pick 4. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Amarius Mims in the 40th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Chop Robinson at the 67th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Matt Goncalves at par in slot 100, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
MarShawn Lloyd at pick 102 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Javon Foster slipping to No. 141 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Frank Gore Jr. slid further than he should have, and pick No. 181 is lovely value for the running back. A need, and now a little less of one.
Michael Barrett at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
