The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Sainristil at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Every board in the league had McCarthy lower, and that gap is the story.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick 27 they get a franchise quarterback, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Jordan Morgan come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Xavier Worthy in No. 68 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Matt Goncalves in the 90th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Steal is underselling it; Mike Sainristil at pick No. 108 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
