The Patriots bet big and early on Devin Leary, 37 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Getting Jordan where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jordan Morgan in the 34th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in slot 68, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
By-the-book stuff, Matt Goncalves at pick 103 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Jaheim Bell at par in the 139th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Sam Hartman at No. 182 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Devin Leary at No. 224 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jawhar Jordan at the 232nd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
