It is a puzzling start. The Cowboys had quarterback and tight end to solve and reached instead for Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE, at the Round 3 slot. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Jones. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Flax has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on T'Vondre Sweat at pick 56, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ricky Pearsall in pick 82. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A curious use of the 90th pick. Quarterback and tight end needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Nothing to complain about; DJ James went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Justin Eboigbe in the 124th overall pick, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Kris Abrams-Draine is a better player than slot 133 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cody Schrader slid further than he should have, and Round 5, Pick 38 is lovely value for the running back. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Christian Jones slipping to No. 212 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They jumped the gun on Jeremy Flax, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fair-plus on Nathaniel Watson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
