They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop.
Every board in the league had Jones lower, and that gap is the story. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Nothing gained and nothing lost at the table.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They did well to land Jordan Morgan in the 40th pick, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamren Kinchens. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jaylin Simpson at the Round 5 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Tahj Washington in pick 179, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Matthew Jones at pick No. 222 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
