The war room fell hard for John Morgan III, and it showed at Round 7, Pick 36: 86 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Mustapha at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.

Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.5 · Pick 37 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 48
They liked T'Vondre Sweat enough to skip the value, taking him in the 37th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.19 · Pick 51 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 50
They took Junior Colson at par in Round 2, Pick 19, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 66
A tidy little value on Mike Sainristil in pick No. 69, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.20 · Pick 84 · Jonah Elliss · DE-EDGE · rank 89
Jonah Elliss in slot 84 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Audric Estime · RB · rank 102
Audric Estime in the Round 4 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Michael Pratt · QB · rank 138
A conviction pick on Michael Pratt at No. 127 that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 128
Johnny Wilson slid further than he should have, and Round 5, Pick 3 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 153
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malik Mustapha in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 218
Good price on Michael Barrett in No. 223, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · John Morgan III · DL-EDGE · rank 342
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for John Morgan III. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
