The Cowboys put a flag in the ground for Tyrice Knight, 54 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Getting Coleman where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback, quarterback and other spots. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Steal is underselling it; Keon Coleman at pick 60 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A surprising call. With cornerback, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the Round 3 slot on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
They took Mohamed Kamara at par in slot 127, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jaylan Ford at pick No. 159 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tyrice Knight in the 162nd overall pick, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Justin Rogers in Round 5, Pick 37 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A wild overpay on Logan Lee in pick 216, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nice patience on Frank Gore Jr., who had no business lasting to No. 233. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Charles Turner III this early at slot 244. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
