Dallas Cowboys

The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: C.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent slot 242 on Charles Turner III, a name most had 44 spots down the list. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Coleman.

Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 14
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Keon Coleman · WR · rank 36
They will replay Keon Coleman at pick No. 56 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 96
The board had cheaper options than Trey Benson at pick 87, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 121
They paid a round early for Javon Foster in the 112th pick, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 123
They paid up for McKinnley Jackson at the 114th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 196
Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 37 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.38 · Pick 213 · Tyrice Knight · LB · rank 216
Tyrice Knight at No. 213 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 254
A wild overpay on Matthew Jones in slot 231, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Charles Turner III · C · rank 286
A big swing on Charles Turner III at the 242nd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
