There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Charles Turner III a full 53 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Gore Jr. pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kris Jenkins is a better player than the 56th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Xavier Legette at the 88th pick is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Jarrian Jones all the way to Round 5, Pick 32, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ty'Ron Hopper at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Jordan Whittington at pick 216, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Matthew Jones at pick 219, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Charles Turner III at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: Frank Gore Jr. at the 244th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 255 with a little surplus value in Edefuan Ulofoshio. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
