The Texans spent real capital to be 87 picks early on Steven Parker, and the board is going to hold them to it. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
That Smith pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 19 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
In slot 20 they get a potential shutdown corner. More want than need.
A quiet steal in the 42nd pick: Emeka Egbuka for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A running back of that caliber at Round 2, Pick 29 is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Tyler Warren at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Deone Walker. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Barrett Carter slid further than he should have, and the 90th pick is lovely value for the linebacker. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kevin Winston Jr. in No. 98 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Fair-plus on Jake Majors, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A real head-scratcher, Samuel Brown in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Brashard Smith in pick 164 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Steven Parker in the 235th overall pick, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
