You could see the war room lean forward. Jarrian Jones at pick No. 182 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tyler Guyton at the 35th overall pick is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Lynn Polk in the 68th pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Will Shipley at slot 104 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Theo Johnson in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Jarrian Jones at No. 182 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Somehow JD Bertrand was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 9, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
