Washington Commanders

The Commanders found their guy under center in Penix Jr.: A.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Michael Penix Jr., and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Very little went wrong, and the A is earned.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Haynes pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

They will need Williams to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

Bottom line, with Michael Penix Jr. leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.16 · Pick 16 · Michael Penix Jr. · QB · rank 9
In pick No. 16 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Ladd McConkey · WR · rank 29
A tidy little value on Ladd McConkey in the 36th pick, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 42
Roman Wilson in pick 38 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 41
By-the-book stuff, Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 69
A straight-up fair deal on Blake Fisher at Round 3, Pick 3, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 55
Christian Haynes in slot 78 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.17 · Pick 81 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 97
They paid a round early for Roger Rosengarten in the 81st overall pick, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 98
No edge and no loss on Caelen Carson in No. 100; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Brennan Jackson · DE-EDGE · rank 124
This one needs a full-page explanation: Brennan Jackson in the 106th overall pick, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 138
Isaac Guerendo in pick 139 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · James Williams · LB · rank 173
A real head-scratcher, James Williams in Round 5, Pick 16 is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Garret Greenfield · OT · rank 229
Garret Greenfield at the 222nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
