The Commanders torched the value chart for Austin Reed, taking him 64 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The whole projection now runs through Michael Penix Jr.; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Booker.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.15
· Pick 15
· Michael Penix Jr.
· QB
· rank 9
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Amarius Mims
· OT
· rank 23
Amarius Mims slid further than he should have, and pick 36 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Ja'Tavion Sanders
· TE
· rank 41
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 40th pick, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.16
· Pick 48
· Ricky Pearsall
· WR
· rank 43
Ricky Pearsall in the 48th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Christian Haynes
· OG
· rank 55
They let Christian Haynes come to them and pounced at slot 67. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.14
· Pick 78
· Blake Fisher
· OT
· rank 69
Value with a capital V on Blake Fisher in Round 3, Pick 14, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.18
· Pick 82
· Austin Booker
· DE-EDGE
· rank 68
Austin Booker slipping to pick 82 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Caelen Carson
· CB
· rank 98
Caelen Carson in No. 100 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.14
· Pick 114
· Johnny Wilson
· WR
· rank 120
No edge and no loss on Johnny Wilson in the 114th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Beau Brade
· S
· rank 162
They reached a country mile for Beau Brade at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.16
· Pick 152
· Dylan Laube
· RB
· rank 171
A big swing on Dylan Laube at pick No. 152, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.2
· Pick 222
· Austin Reed
· QB
· rank 286
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Austin Reed well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
