The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Michael Penix Jr., and the whole operation now runs on his development. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.
They are betting Williams proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Landing Jackson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, with Michael Penix Jr. leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
In No. 27 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jordan Morgan at slot 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on Roman Wilson in pick 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Tavion Sanders. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ladd McConkey in Round 2, Pick 17, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Austin Booker at the 67th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Bucky Irving at pick No. 78 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jarvis Brownlee Jr. a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Johnny Wilson in No. 104, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take James Williams this early at Round 4, Pick 15. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A big swing on Beau Brade at pick 139, well ahead of any board in the building. A minor itch, scratched.
Somehow Brennan Jackson was still sitting there in the 152nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had Tip Reiman higher than slot 185, and the tight end fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Garret Greenfield in the 222nd pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
