When a board-topper like Jamon Dumas-Johnson slides to pick No. 99, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Jake Matthews gives the group a proven body among the projects. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 21st pick they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy little value on Colston Loveland in No. 26, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Josh Simmons in Round 3, Pick 3, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Oscar Delp at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 99 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jaydn Ott in pick No. 131 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
No drama and no debate, Malik Spencer went about where he belonged in the 132nd overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They took Jaheim Oatis at par in Round 7, Pick 3, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
