The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. On value alone, Washington makes the weekend a net positive.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, J.J. McCarthy in No. 27 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in slot 34, with Amarius Mims worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reach for Xavier Worthy in the 42nd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Blake Fisher at pick 68 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
A wild overpay on Theo Johnson in pick No. 92, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Braelon Allen went about where he belonged in the 102nd overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They went early on Justin Eboigbe in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had cheaper options than Ty'Ron Hopper at the Round 5 slot, and it noticed. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
M.J. Devonshire at pick No. 179 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They barely believed it either: Isaiah Davis still on the board at pick 185. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 231st overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Darius Muasau at slot 249 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
