The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Caleb Williams, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
They will need Gore Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Morgan. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Lynn Polk in slot 66, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They went early on Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 3, Pick 6, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kiran Amegadjie in pick 99 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Jason Marshall Jr. at No. 141 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No edge and no loss on Jacob Cowing in the 180th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dallin Holker in the 208th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Frank Gore Jr. at the 223rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
