After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Landing McGlothern that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The Hartman pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
T'Vondre Sweat at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cooper Beebe a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Cade Stover in the 68th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid up for Renardo Green at pick No. 69 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They let Dominick Puni come to them and pounced at pick 101. A need, and now a little less of one.
Brenden Rice at No. 103 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy little value on Cam Hart in the 105th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jaylin Simpson at Round 5, Pick 1 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They robbed the room for Luke McCaffrey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Dwight McGlothern was still sitting there in slot 193, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sam Hartman this early at the 231st pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Jalen Coker at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Rasheen Ali in No. 255 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
