You build a draft on nights like this. James Burnip had no business being available in No. 231, and the Dolphins did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
If Slackman pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
They will replay Colston Loveland at the Round 2 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Andrew Mukuba in pick No. 98 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
A running back of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 13 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Barrett Carter in the 133rd pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Lathan Ransom in slot 149 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
You do not let a wide receiver like Kyren Lacy reach No. 154 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Joey Slackman in pick 224 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; James Burnip at Round 7, Pick 15 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Justin Walley well ahead of where he belonged. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
