The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The 49ers watched Jake Slaughter slide 21 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. If Young pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 27 they get a premier pass rusher, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
They will replay Jake Slaughter at the 75th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Austin Barber in No. 87 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Oscar Delp went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid a round early for Gracen Halton in pick No. 133, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They let Davison Igbinosun come to them and pounced at the 138th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
