The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Nathan Thomas, the No. 198 name on the board, sitting there at pick 255 like a gift left on the doorstep.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They will need Taylor to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback at fair value.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A conviction pick on Renardo Green at No. 58 that the board grades a round light. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Khyree Jackson at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Roger Rosengarten at pick 91 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Nothing to complain about; Jarrian Jones went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Tyrone Tracy Jr. was still sitting there in pick No. 169, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached a country mile for Trey Taylor at slot 202, and the board is aghast. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They read the board right and Blake Watson was the payoff at the Round 6 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaylon Carlies this early at the 245th overall pick. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Nathan Thomas reach slot 255 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
