When a board-topper like Xavier Worthy slides to pick 68, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The McCarthy pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
J.J. McCarthy at the Round 2 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Xavier Worthy still on the board at slot 68. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Ray Davis at the 104th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Dillon Johnson in No. 136 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
