New England Patriots

Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

The Patriots did not so much draft Logan Fano as overpay for him, 53 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.

That Thomas pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Denzel Boston · WR · rank 30
In pick 31 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 49
Quietly one of the better values of the day, A.J. Haulcy at the Round 2 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Drew Shelton · OT · rank 95
A straight-up fair deal on Drew Shelton at slot 95, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Max Llewellyn · DE-EDGE · rank 153
A big swing on Max Llewellyn at Round 4, Pick 25, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · CJ Daniels · WR · rank 142
CJ Daniels at the 131st overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Zane Durant · DT · rank 177
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zane Durant. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Keagen Trost · OT · rank 182
A tidy bit of business in the 191st overall pick, where Keagen Trost graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Toriano Pride Jr. · CB · rank 206
A conviction pick on Toriano Pride Jr. at Round 6, Pick 17 that the board grades a round light. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Logan Fano · DE-EDGE · rank 255
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Logan Fano. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Jeremiah Wright · OG · rank 212
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Wright in the 212th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Zavion Thomas · WR · rank 219
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 247 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
