Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Kamal Hadden, the No. 168 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 7 slot.
Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Laube has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Taliese Fuaga in Round 2, Pick 2 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in slot 68, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Brenden Rice at pick No. 103 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dylan Laube at pick 137 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tip Reiman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Ryan Flournoy in the 193rd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Kamal Hadden at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
