Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Packers spent No. 230 on Marshel Martin, a name the board had a full 34 spots lower. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A to show for it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. On value alone, Ratledge makes the weekend a net positive.
The veteran additions, Garrett Bradbury chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, with Chop Robinson leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 20 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. The biggest hole, addressed.
Keon Coleman at slot 43 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Lynn Polk. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Quinyon Mitchell in pick No. 73; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Nazir Stackhouse at par in pick 86, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 87th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Marshawn Kneeland at the 109th pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tate Ratledge in pick 120 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nice patience on Ray Davis, who had no business lasting to No. 163. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Brennan Armstrong in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steve Linton in the 176th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in slot 187: Julian Pearl for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Chau Smith-Wade slipping to Round 6, Pick 42 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for Jack Howell in pick No. 219, more than the board wanted. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Marshel Martin at pick 230 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
