Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Dorian Singer, the No. 207 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 241. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They are betting Henderson proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
The Packers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a home-run threat at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kamari Lassiter in slot 41. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Brandon Dorlus in the 51st pick is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had Kalen King higher than pick 52, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ja'Lynn Polk at No. 66 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
They liked Zak Zinter enough to skip the value, taking him in the 73rd overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Nazir Stackhouse at par in Round 3, Pick 18, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Connor Colby a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A conviction pick on Luke Lachey at pick 133 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, KJ Jefferson at pick No. 135 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ty'Ron Hopper in the 154th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at the Round 5 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They did well to land Malik Mustapha in Round 5, Pick 25, just ahead of his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Gerald Mincey at slot 173 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Devin Neal slipping to the 187th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A slide stopped in pick No. 198, with Bru McCoy worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A quiet steal in pick 217: Shemar Turner for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Erick All. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No drama and no debate, Storm Duck went about where he belonged in the 226th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take LaDarius Henderson this early at the 230th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for Dorian Singer here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Mario Williams in slot 243, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
