You could see the war room lean forward. Steve Linton at pick 205 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The Randolph Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for JT Tuimoloau in the 32nd pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Kalen King at the 41st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Calen Bullock went about where he belonged in slot 43. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Ladd McConkey at par in pick No. 61, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Ja'Lynn Polk in Round 3, Pick 9 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Michael Pratt in No. 90 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Blake Fisher at pick 97 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyleik Williams. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Zach Frazier at slot 129, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
AJ Barner in pick 135 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Cole Bishop at pick No. 137 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Ray Davis is a better player than Round 5, Pick 30 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at No. 177 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Gabe Hall in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Keith Randolph Jr. at the 187th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Steve Linton at the 205th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dominic Lovett in pick 220 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Joshua Gray at the 230th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Trey Knox at Round 7, Pick 26 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
