The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Jonah Monheim fell into pick 240.
Reaching for Pegues left real value on the table behind him. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 32nd overall pick they get a load in the middle, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tate Ratledge. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach on Denzel Burke in the 77th pick; the board had better options right there. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Carson Schwesinger in Round 3, Pick 18 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A big swing on JJ Pegues at pick No. 145, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
RJ Harvey at pick 219 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
