The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Jonah Monheim fell into pick 240.

Reaching for Pegues left real value on the table behind him. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Josh Conerly Jr. · OT · rank 36
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.32 · Pick 32 · Kenneth Grant · DT · rank 19
In the 32nd overall pick they get a load in the middle, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 75
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tate Ratledge. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Denzel Burke · CB · rank 89
A reach on Denzel Burke in the 77th pick; the board had better options right there. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Carson Schwesinger · LB · rank 87
Carson Schwesinger in Round 3, Pick 18 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.6 · Pick 145 · JJ Pegues · DT · rank 187
A big swing on JJ Pegues at pick No. 145, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.1 · Pick 219 · RJ Harvey · RB · rank 170
RJ Harvey at pick 219 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.4 · Pick 222 · Jake Briningstool · TE · rank 247
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jake Briningstool in No. 222, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.22 · Pick 240 · Jonah Monheim · C · rank 148
Jonah Monheim at slot 240 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
