The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Chargers watched Anthony Gould slide 59 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C-.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Jackson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Joe Alt in the Round 1 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 5, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
You do not let a cornerback like T.J. Tampa reach No. 69 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
McKinnley Jackson at pick No. 104 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Beaux Limmer at slot 117 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Beau Brade at pick 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Joe Milton III in the 180th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Anthony Gould still on the board at the 225th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Jackson Sirmon enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
