Future A+

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Bo Nix is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. The bottom line is a respectable B+.

The Simpson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Bo Nix · QB · rank 33
In the 26th pick they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 23
Amarius Mims slid further than he should have, and No. 34 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 66
No edge and no loss on Ja'Lynn Polk in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Austin Booker · DE-EDGE · rank 68
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Austin Booker. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Blake Corum · RB · rank 78
The board had Blake Corum higher than pick No. 92, and the running back fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 83
Taking Cade Stover in the 104th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Tyrone Tracy Jr. · WR · rank 126
They read the board right and Tyrone Tracy Jr. was the payoff at slot 137. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Josh Newton · CB · rank 153
Josh Newton in pick 180 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 158
They will replay Jaylin Simpson at slot 186 for years; that is how good the value is. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 177
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Chau Smith-Wade at the 193rd overall pick is the proof. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Darius Muasau · LB · rank 222
Darius Muasau at Round 7, Pick 11 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
