The Phillip Webb selection is the head-turner. The Cowboys reached 113 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Schwesinger value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
Derrick Harmon is a better player than the 39th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Jihaad Campbell at the 41st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Benjamin Morrison in slot 44, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dylan Sampson in pick 57 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Tate Ratledge went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 30. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Xavier Restrepo slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah Bond at the 74th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Value said wait; Jalen Milroe in the Round 3 slot says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jake Majors at Round 4, Pick 7 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cam Skattebo at pick No. 110 is the proof. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Carson Schwesinger at pick 113 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tyler Baron at the 131st pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Hollin Pierce in slot 140 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on James Burnip in No. 150; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Somehow Bhayshul Tuten was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 31, and they pounced on premier running back value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Dont'e Thornton Jr. at No. 172 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Luke Lachey at par in the 190th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Phillip Webb at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They reached a country mile for Thor Griffith at the 249th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
