Washington Commanders

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Commanders to a D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.

They are betting Bishop proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Jordan steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Joe Alt · OT · rank 3
In slot 4 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 32
Fair-plus on Graham Barton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Ladd McConkey · WR · rank 38
A straight-up fair deal on Ladd McConkey at the 36th pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 52
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick 40 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Devontez Walker · WR · rank 48
The board fumbled Devontez Walker all the way to the 67th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 79
They paid up for Malachi Corley at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Max Melton · CB · rank 111
They paid a round early for Max Melton in No. 100, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 128
They talked themselves into Cole Bishop at Round 4, Pick 2, and the board did not agree. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 132
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cam Hart at the 141st pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 196
A premium they did not need to pay, Jared Wiley a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Jawhar Jordan · RB · rank 202
Jawhar Jordan at the 223rd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
