There is reaching, and then there is J.J. Weaver at the 229th pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 82 and dared it to prove them wrong. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
Everything downstream of Jayden Daniels depends on Jayden Daniels, and the building knows it. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On value alone, Rice makes the weekend a net positive.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
In slot 27 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A conviction pick on Roman Wilson at No. 34 that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bucky Irving at pick 68 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Brenden Rice slipping to pick No. 104 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Roger Rosengarten in Round 4, Pick 36 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They liked Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 6 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into J.J. Weaver at slot 229, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
