You build a draft on nights like this. Dylan Sampson had no business being available in Round 5, Pick 6, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
If Stackhouse pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Isaiah Bond at pick No. 38 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Aireontae Ersery at slot 44 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Denzel Burke this early at the 49th pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Luther Burden III in the 50th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tyler Warren at pick 72 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
They talked themselves into Deone Walker at Round 3, Pick 18, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Jake Majors at No. 108 for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at the 113th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Value said wait; Nazir Stackhouse in pick 116 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Dylan Sampson at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
You do not let a linebacker like Harold Perkins Jr. reach Round 5, Pick 14 and blink. They did not. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
The board fumbled Ollie Gordon II all the way to pick No. 218, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Rod Moore at the 220th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They jumped the gun on Oscar Delp, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Barrett Carter in No. 241 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A conviction pick on Javontez Spraggins at pick 256 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
