The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Michael Penix Jr., and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.
That Ali pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Reaching for Holker left real value on the table behind him. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marvin Harrison Jr.. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Michael Penix Jr. in the 10th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tyler Guyton at pick 35 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Edgerrin Cooper all the way to the 68th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Dallin Holker at pick No. 137 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
