Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent the Round 6 slot on Trevor Keegan, a name most had 48 spots down the list. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.
The Packers indulged a want in Smith while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On value alone, Allen makes the weekend a net positive.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Guyton. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on Brenden Rice at Round 2, Pick 25 that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Junior Colson at par in slot 69, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A curious use of the 88th overall pick. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
They paid up for Khyree Jackson at pick 91 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Braelon Allen slid further than he should have, and the 168th overall pick is lovely value for the running back. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Trevor Keegan in Round 6, Pick 28 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Hunter Nourzad at pick 216 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach for Trey Taylor in pick No. 243; a little patience would have been rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trey Wedig. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
