Nobody else had J.J. Weaver anywhere near the 239th overall pick. The Patriots did, by 117 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
However the rest shakes out, Styles at that price is a win they earned. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Will Campbell at slot 6 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tate Ratledge at the Round 2 slot is the proof. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Isaiah Bond in pick 75 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A conviction pick on Tacario Davis at Round 3, Pick 22 that the board grades a round light. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They robbed the room for Sonny Styles here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let a running back like Quinshon Judkins reach No. 144 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 218th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Gunnar Helm in Round 7, Pick 9 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
A big swing on J.J. Weaver at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
