The Roger Rosengarten selection is the head-turner. The Packers reached 39 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Junior Colson at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Roger Rosengarten at pick No. 58 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on MarShawn Lloyd. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dominick Puni in the 91st overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tykee Smith at No. 126 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They went early on Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 169, and the value did not follow. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Evan Williams well ahead of where he belonged. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jacob Monk a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Jaylon Carlies in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They reached into another round for Donovan Jennings, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
