The Evan Williams selection is the head-turner. The Packers reached 63 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The McLachlan pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, outstanding value to boot.
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 41, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 2 slot on Junior Colson with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
MarShawn Lloyd at No. 88 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Roger Rosengarten at the 91st pick, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Malik Mustapha at pick 126 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Evan Williams in the 169th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Decamerion Richardson at pick No. 202 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Jacob Monk in slot 219, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Tanner McLachlan all the way to pick 245, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Trey Taylor at Round 7, Pick 35 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
