There is reaching, and then there is John Emery Jr. at Round 6, Pick 44. The Packers jumped the board by 124 and dared it to prove them wrong. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
Getting Smith-Wade where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Nubin at pick 33 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A surprising call. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 41 on Calen Bullock, a safety they were not short of.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at the 57th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Christian Haynes in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A big swing on Darius Robinson at the 91st overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Jaylen Wright in the 135th overall pick says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Chau Smith-Wade still on the board at pick 203. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dwight McGlothern at No. 217 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for John Emery Jr.. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Evan Williams at the 222nd pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 7 slot with a little surplus value in Nathaniel Watson. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
