Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Junior Colson got past him. The Packers do not have to explain a thing at the Round 3 slot.
If Knight pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Oladapo pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, cornerback and other spots still on the board.
They went 2 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Jordan Morgan at pick 41 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy little value on Javon Bullard in pick No. 58, a step better than break-even. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Taking Junior Colson in pick 88 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on MarShawn Lloyd. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, cornerback and other spots still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 26 on Kitan Oladapo, a safety they were not short of.
They talked themselves into Tyrice Knight at the 169th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Evan Williams well ahead of where he belonged. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Jacob Monk at slot 219 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
LaDarius Henderson at No. 245 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
KT Leveston at slot 255 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
