You build a draft on nights like this. Andru Phillips had no business being available in pick 217, and the Packers did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
The Thomas reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board had cheaper options than Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 41st overall pick, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They barely believed it either: Javon Bullard still on the board at Round 3, Pick 25. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They let Malachi Corley come to them and pounced at slot 91. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Foster at the 125th pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jaylen Wright in pick 135 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Gabe Hall at No. 203 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Andru Phillips in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Xavier Thomas at the 219th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Demani Richardson in No. 246 is fair value, right on his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
