You build a draft on nights like this. Javon Baker had no business being available in pick No. 217, and the Packers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The McGlothern pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a potential shutdown corner at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Calen Bullock at pick No. 41 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 25 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Bucky Irving in No. 88 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A want over a need in the 91st overall pick: Jaden Hicks adds a safety while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Javon Foster at pick 125 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaylen Wright this early at the 135th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They went early on Tanor Bortolini in pick No. 203, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Javon Baker in slot 217 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
A wild overpay on Dwight McGlothern in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 7 slot with a little surplus value in Nathaniel Watson. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
