The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Caleb Williams, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
However the rest shakes out, James at that price is a win they earned. Every board in the league had Robinson lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Jordan Morgan slipping to Round 2, Pick 5 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Ja'Tavion Sanders, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cooper Beebe a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Darius Robinson well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled D.J. James all the way to the 102nd pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on MarShawn Lloyd, who had no business lasting to the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jaylan Ford in pick 181 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Fair-plus on Isaiah Neyor, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Trevor Keegan at the 230th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
